I grew up in Roland Park in Baltimore, Maryland. My younger sister Sally Proctor is in garden and floral design and our youngest sister Rebecca Proctor is the creative director for Mackenzie-Childs.
Appearances were of the utmost importance in our house. My mother had an antique shop for a while where my sisters and I gained an appreciation of fine things. Our mother was an avid gardener who saw to it that something was always in bloom.
Mom insisted on doing things a bit differently than our neighbors. Much to my dismay, my sixth grade graduation dress from Calvert School was matelassé - really? I wanted one from the department store. My parents often hosted jazz nights (Dad was a piano player). We often put on plays and made movies. The unevenness of our beautiful but wacky household combined with a classical education from Bryn Mawr School fostered creativity as a refuge from harsh realities. I wouldn’t have changed a thing. |
After running an arts based after school program at Collegiate School for sixteen years, I moved to the design field where I worked for fifteen years in area retail stores. I opened my own business, Claire Marsh Interiors, in March of 2013. The response has been great and I am having a blast.
